At-Home VAR
Recreating the World Cup's offside VAR with a single broadcast camera instead of a whole stadium of them - it runs the full computer-vision pipeline in your browser to call onside or offside.
The offside VAR system at the World Cup is honestly beautiful - a stadium full of cameras plus a sensor in the ball gives referees a 3D rendering of the exact moment of contact, and I wanted to see if I could basically recreate that with a single broadcast camera and some computer vision. You freeze the frame the ball is played and it runs the whole chain on your own GPU through WebGPU and ONNX Runtime: it detects the players, estimates their pose, calibrates the pitch from the field lines, and then (the genuinely hard part) places each player’s furthest-forward legal body point on the grass, a leaning shoulder or head and not just the feet, before drawing the offside line and giving you an onside or offside call with a confidence.
